Carlton County Public Health also provides nursing services to inmates at the Carlton County Jail.
Carlton County is unique in being one of the last few counties in Minnesota to maintain the connection between the county jail and county public health and human services department.
Rules
Correctional health nursing is a specialized field that must follow many state statutes and the Chapter 2911 rules as determined by the MN Department of Corrections. Some of the services that nurses provide are: mantoux testing, pregnancy testing, medication management, connection with other resources, and case management.
The Carlton County Jail also contracts with a local primary care physician who visits the jail weekly to meet with inmates, as well as psychiatric services done through a tele-health system for inmates with mental health needs.
Based on acuity level, inmates can also be referred out to other services which may include detoxification, hospital level services, and dental appointments.
