Household Hazardous Waste Facility

Products, such as paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, and pesticides can contain hazardous ingredients and require special care for disposal and must not go into the regular garbage.  Carlton County residents may bring their household hazardous waste, free of charge, during facility hours.

Hours and Location

The Household Hazardous Waste Facility is located at the Transfer Station.  

It is open mid-May to mid-October 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

Tuesdays and Saturdays only.

Last open day for 2019 was Saturday, Oct. 12th.  

Re-opening Tuesday, May 5, 2020.  

WLSSD has a year-round facility at 27th Ave West & Courtland St. Duluth.

Acceptable Materials

  • Latex paint
  • Oil paint
  • Stain and varnish
  • Pesticides (herbicides, fungicides, insecticides)
  • Gasoline & other fuels
  • Solvents
  • Mercury (thermometers, thermostats, and other mercury containing items)
  • Pool chemicals
  • Fluorescent light bulbs
  • Rechargeable batteries   
  • Cleaners
