Household Hazardous Waste Facility

Products, such as paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, and pesticides can contain hazardous ingredients and require special care for disposal and must not go into the regular garbage.  Carlton County residents may bring their household hazardous waste, free of charge, during facility hours.

Households Only

This facility accepts hazardous waste from Carlton County households only. Hazardous waste from businesses or other institutions is not accepted. Businesses and institution need to contact a private contractor, such as Clean Shop to properly dispose of their hazardous waste.

Hours and Location

The Household Hazardous Waste Facility is located at the Carlton County Transfer Station at 1950 Hwy 210, Carlton. It is open Mid-May to Mid-October.

2023 Open Season: Tuesday, May 9, 2023 - Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023

Tuesdays 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM and Saturdays 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM.  


WLSSD in West Duluth operates a year-round HHW facility.

  • Pesticides (herbicides, fungicides, insecticides)
  • Gasoline & other fuels
  • Solvents
  • Mercury (thermometers, thermostats, and other mercury containing items)
  • Pool chemicals
  • Fluorescent light bulbs
  • Rechargeable batteries   
  • Cleaners
