[ARCHIVED] PRESS RELEASE: Carlton County COVID-19 update 4/3/20

Carlton County COVID-19 update 4/3/20

General Updates:

Carlton County officials were notified by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) of two additional lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases in Carlton County residents. No additional details were shared at this time and the cases are both being investigated by MDH. The lab-confirmed case total for Carlton County is five. Please find the situation map, updated by MDH daily at 11am here.

We are almost one week in to Minnesota’s stay at home order. Just a reminder that it means: avoid going out in public unless absolutely necessary, like to get groceries, medicine, or get medical care. Staying home saves lives by slowing the spread of COVID-19. It gives our medical system time to prepare to care for people who get really sick from the virus. Watch this video for a quick 1-minute review of the order, and visit this website for Frequently Asked Questions! If you are worried about violations of the stay at home order, do not call 911. Instead, call 651-793-3746 or email sahviolations@state.mn.us.

Visit the National & Community Service webpage for “10 Ways to Safely Help your Community during COVID-19” here.

Hunger Impact Partners has partnered with the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) in the past to create the popular Summer Foods app to help Minnesota families find locations serving free meals during the summer months, and now they have created a new app to help families during this unprecedented time. Families in need can now use a mobile app to find locations serving free meals for children under 18 in their community, including some school locations that have been able to convert to open sites, as well as many community locations. Search “Free Meals for Kids” on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Thank you to Hunger Impact Partners for all their work on creating this tool for families across our state. Find more details about the app on their website.

Additional Health Recommendations:

Staying at home can be hard for individuals and families alike. If you have young children or teens, it is hard to feel positive when they are driving us up the wall.  We often end up saying, “Stop doing that!”, but children are much more likely to do what we ask if we give them positive instructions and lots of praise for what they do right. Find the following tips at the World Health Organization’s website here:

  1. Say the behavior you want to see. Use positives words when telling your children what to do; like “Please put your clothes away” instead of saying, “Don’t make a mess.”
  2. It’s all in the delivery. Shouting at your child will make you and them more stressed and angrier.  Get your child’s attention by using their name and speaking in a calm voice.
  3. Praise your child when they are behaving well. Try praising your child or teenager for something they have done well. It will reassure them that you notice and care.
  4. Get real. Can your child actually do what you are asking of them? It is very hard for a child to keep quiet inside for a whole day but maybe they can keep quiet for 15 minutes while you are on a call.
  5. Help your teen stay connected. Teens especially need to be able to communicate with their friends. Help your teen connect through social media and other safe distancing ways. This is something you can to together!
